About Mackenzie Glass
A family business founded in 1948 by Kenneth Graham Mackenzie in Bournemouth, after learning his craft the hard way as a boy in the technical and design department of one of the large London glass merchants.
With a capital of £70 working first at making decorative mirrors from a spare room in his flat.
Soon the top quality of his work attracted orders from all over southern England .It was not long before he had to employ and train more craftsmen and the move to premises in Shelly Road Boscombe was made.
The name of Mackenzie as a glass specialist spread rapidly, with continued growth a move to even bigger premises at Ashley Road Boscombe became essential allowing expansion in to merchanting and glazing . After a few more years it was decided to expand the company with a branch in Exeter a difficult territory as it had never previously possessed a glazing business.
Managed by a MrT.Proctor Mackenzie glass operated from Radnor Place with a small fleet of glazing and delivery vans, shortly after this our very own Mr Franklin started as an apprentice with the company earning £2 a week.
After continued growth in 1979 Mackenzie Glass became part of the large pilkington glass group of companies and a move to a large factory at Marsh Barton soon followed.
In 1998 Mackenzie Glass was subject to a management buyout by Mr Jim Franklin, now with 38 years experience covering all departments in the company.
